Corona Walker was born in Dartmouth in 1870 and died there in 1889 at the age of 18. Her broken, weathered headstone in the Dartmouth Public Cemetery is the inspiration for a multidisciplinary walking project that Barbara Lounder began during the coronavirus 19 pandemic. Corona Walker’s life and death are a mystery; there is very little of to be found in official records and archives. Her life is left to our imaginations.

In Diadem, Lounder brings together found objects, photographs and a poem to present an incomplete and speculative narrative about Corona Walker. Diadem is accompanied by a limited-edition chapbook, available for purchase at Hermes or through the artist.

Barbara Lounder lives and works in Dartmouth Nova Scotia and is a founding member of Hermes. Her work can be found in galleries and collections across Canada, and she publishes in scholarly and literary publications internationally. She is a regular contributor to writers’ events with Dartspeak and other literary venues.

The chapbook Becoming Corona Walker features essays by Barbara Lounder and Robert Bean. It was designed and produced by Copy Shop Books & Studio in an edition of 100. ISBN 978-1-0699679-0-9. $20 CAD (and shipping for out-of-town orders), cash or e-transfer to Barbara Lounder.
