The Fourth Driest in 114 Years Field Notes, detail
This exhibition of four new books by visual artist and poet Susan Mills activates the Hermes space with works installed directly on the gallery walls and inviting our (gentle) touch. Unlike many book exhibitions, where works are presented in glass cases with just the cover or a single page spread visible, Mills’ books may be handled and seen in their entirety as the visitor moves through the gallery. Colorful, patterned and with words to read, Mills works invite a highly visual appreciation, but also call on our senses of touch, smell and sound. Field books: birds, buoys, seeding, rain is curated by Hermes member Barbara Lounder.
Susan Mills is a visual artist and poet who works entirely in book form. Her book works include one-of-a-kind books, small editions, chapbooks, and open editions. Her work is rooted in Conceptual Feminist Art, the poetry of The New York School, and in found materials. She lives in Nova Scotia, Mi'kma'ki, and works in Saskatchewan, Treaty 6 Territory. She recently tabled at the Codex International Art Book Fair in Oakland CA, and at the inaugural Halifax Art Book Fair. She will be participating in Nuit Blanche Saskatoon with an edition of 300 glow-in-the-dark field notebooks, to be handbound outside at night. Her work is in more than 100 international collections.
